There are many reasons why I decided to give up volunteering for Middle Wisconsin, but it basically comes down to it just did not make me happy or feel like a worthwhile pursuit. When I felt forced to run pieces espousing isolationist rhetoric that I strongly feel contradicts the values the publication touted on its website, that was the last straw. I am okay volunteering where I am appreciated and respected, but I just don’t have time for someone who wanted to kill the publication now continuing to dictate content.
Will and I built capacity to help the publication avoid the costly mistakes it made in the past. We modeled good writing, editing, and publishing. Now it is up to the organization’s board to decide what MW becomes, and if they do dissolve, they now know that they must donate any remaining funds to a similar non-profit. I recommended the Wisconsin Examiner.
Progressive non-profit journalism that holds truth to power is the ultimate culture jam!
